Case Study: User-Centric Innovation: Leveraging In-Clinic Ethnography for Veterinary Efficiency

THE CLIENT: Animal Health Equipment Manufacturer

THE INDUSTRY: Animal Health Equipment

THE CHALLENGE

An animal health equipment manufacturer set out to develop an innovative medical technology that would improve veterinary clinic efficiency. In an era of chronic veterinary staffing shortages, the stakes were high: the solution needed to allow clinics to do more with less while maintaining quality of care. At the same time, the client needed to ensure the design solved real-world friction points rather than adding to the technical "noise" of a busy practice.

THE SOLUTION

Our Vet Access Division designed a comprehensive qualitative research study to capture the nuances of clinical life that data points alone often miss:

  • 360° Stakeholder Research: We moved beyond the primary buyer to interview the entire ecosystem: veterinarians, technicians, and corporate stakeholders. This ensured the machine met the ergonomic needs of the techs and the ROI requirements of business leaders.

  • In-Clinic Ethnography: Our researchers conducted on-site observations to see how the equipment was actually being used. By watching "workarounds" and physical bottlenecks in real-time, we identified pain points that participants often forget to mention in interviews.

THE IMPACT

By prioritizing deep qualitative insights, the client bypassed an additional quantitative phase and moved straight into high-confidence development.

  • Accelerated Development: The client handed the qualitative findings directly to their innovation team, allowing them to immediately begin building a product centered on verified user needs.

  • Condensed Research Timeline: By moving straight from qualitative insights to development, the client bypassed the multi-week process of designing, fielding, and analyzing a follow-up quantitative study.

  • Practical Utility: The research identified specific ergonomic and workflow gaps, ensuring the final machine would be an asset to the user’s daily routine rather than another complex tool to manage.
